Olaf Brzeski, Bad guy, 2010, porcelain, approx. 50 cm (h)

The newest show of Olaf Brzeski’s works was born feeding on the two mutually exclusive artistic media of expression. One - the noble, requiring meticulous and diligent work that can easily take weeks to complete, although somewhat old-fashioned and very bourgeois art of porcelain, the other being the most direct medium of all expressive media, as every artist shall attest to – the art of drawing. This misalliance reflects ambiguity of Olaf Brzeski’s attitude toward sculpture as an artistic medium, which contains as much loathing of the physical strain corollary to every new realization of a project, as it does the need to maintain freedom of choice of materials and the usual technical challenge.

The objects covered with glazed drawings present us with an occasion of a discreet peep into the author’s fantasy world and an insight into his private inspirations. Simultaneously, the technique used has the property of a tattoo and stays on marking its presence for ever.

The definition of the face of one of the heroes of the show that I have drawn could have been a definition of a much larger and more technically advanced project. Could have been,, because now I have realized I no longer have to be casting my projects in heavy metals, nor do I have to be erecting monumental constructions, since I can easily stick to drawing, instead and give up the whole space for myself and my viewers to fill with unfulfilled yearnings and free productions of imagination. From now on, I’ll be drawing only.

On plates.

Out most sincere 'thank-yous' and expressions of gratitude go to the Porcelana Walbrzych – a porcelain production plant for its invaluable support extended to us throughout the realization of the project.
