The Pod zamkniętymi powiekami / With eyes shut exhibition presents, side by side, works by different artists, but which have a common denominator: each of them is a moment of initiation revisited; each an attempt to come to grips with an event from the past, which has proven a threshold for some, a point of no return, a moment after which nothing was the same.
By definition, such moments dig deep into one’s mind. Ever present as they are, however, almost never do they present themselves as clear-cut veracious snap shots of the past. Instead, they transform, sublimate, shift shapes, and gather meanings – an experience turns trauma.
With eyes shut, concentration comes easier, thoughts form clearer, but at the same time behind shut eyes, opens the space of seclusion, where the mind may travel back, conscious of the present moment, to the that point in the past.
The artists pursue different strategies; whether it be an attempt at ‘domestication’ through re-enactment, or rationalization via aloofness of contemplation of artistic self – each of them finds his/her one-off path to the past drama.
