“Vision Division” is an exhibition of three artists of the same generation, who are using media as different as sculpture, video, installation and drawing. In diverse visionary styles they are presenting their own versions of reality, which makes it difficult to encompass all three under one umbrella. There certainly is, however, a common ground where those three meet and that is their shared internal urge to create imaginary worlds that often feed on destruction. The dormant potential stretched over between the commandments of imagination and those of annihilation is also to be found in the video screening curated by Antonia Lotz and Theresa Frölich, which will be presented in two parts at the exhibition’s opening.
OLAF BRZESKI (Wroclaw)
Born 1975 in Poznan, Poland. Studied at Wroclaw Academy of Fine Arts. Selected solo exhibitions: Czarna Gallery, Warsaw (2009); „Out of tomb“, Piekary Gallery, Poznan (2008); „The Villains, Art is Violence“, CCA Laznia, Gdansk (2008); „Villains - the extensively awaited swap of roles“, SiC Gallery - BWA Wroclaw (2008); „The Hunter“, Okna Gallery - Center of Contemporary Art Ujazdowski Castle, Warsaw, (2007) and „Humen Only“, BWA Awangarda Wroclaw (2006). Selected group exhibitions: „EAST International“, Norwich (2009); „Ballads and Romances“, Raster Gallery, Warsaw (2008); „Establishment“, CCA Ujazdowski Castle, Warsaw (2008); „ITCA 2008 - International Triennale of Contemporary Art 2008“, National Gallery, Prague (2008); „Day After“, Zamek, Culture Center, Poznan (2007) and „A-Hauset“, off show in working space, Copenhagen (2006).
A moment of destruction often stands at the beginning of Olaf Brzeski’s sculptures, videos and installations. These moments are transformed into vivid visions and glamorous fantasies; yet notions of ruins, disasters or demolition are always tangible in Olaf Brzeski’s works. This division is mirrored in his choice of materials - a diverse set of resources such as ceramics, latex, wood, bone and coal.
Olaf Brzeski contributes a new work to Vision Division at Czarna Gallery, a surprise for Warsaw, not to be missed.
THERESA FRÖLICH (Cologne)
Born 1977 in Göttingen, Germany. Studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Münster and Munich in the classes of Guillaume Bijl and Klaus vom Bruch. Selected exhibitions include: Kunstmuseum Mülheim (2009); “Theresa Frölich und Reiner Eisch”, RINGEL/garage Düsseldorf (2008); “Linien. Laub. GWK-Förderpreis 2007”, Glaskasten Marl (2007); “Kölnquartett” Fuhrwerkswaage Köln (1007); “Ida Gerhardi Förderpreis”, Städtische Galerie Lüdenscheid (2007); “Field of Vision”, Galerie Kunst und Bauschlosserei, Leipzig (2007); “Theresa Frölich - Daniela Löbbert”, Universität Innsbruck, Österreich (2007); “Paradise Lost”, Galerie plan.d., Düsseldorf (2007); “Soul Surfer”, soloshow at modulorbeat, Münster (2006) and “Josef Albers für 5 Mark”, Westfälischer Kunstverein, Münster (2006).
Theresa Frölich’s installations comprise pictures, digital prints and threads that intervene in space and transform their particular surrounding. Stitching and stretching threads do not only connect canvases, walls and objects, but build up stories theories and networks. These are often generated out of media images, combining trends and histories of the virtual worlds surrounding us.
For the exhibition Theresa Frölich will weave a new work throughout the whole space of Czarna Gallery, with which she envisions the divided face of Patty Hearst, a rich man’s granddaughter who was kidnapped by the Symbionese Liberation Army in 1974.
JEN LIU (New York)
Born 1976 in Smithtown (NY), USA. Studied creative writing at Oberlin College in Ohio as well as visual arts and new media at the California Institute for the Arts in Valencia (CA). Recent solo exhibitions include: “Drastic Measures, Unknown Pleasures”, Ceri Hand Gallery, Liverpool (2008); „Insurrection for a Million or One“, Upstream Gallery, Amsterdam (2008) and „New Dawn Fades“, Lizabeth Oliveria Gallery, Los Angeles (2007). Selected group exhibitions: „Agrifashionistas“, Royal Academy, London (2008); „The Violet Hour: Matthew Day Jackson, Jen Liu, and David Maljkovic“, Henry Art Gallery, Seattle (2008); „Dream of Today“, Steve Turner Contemporary, Los Angeles (2007); „The Present Order is the Disorder of the Future“, De Hallen Museum, Haarlem (NL) (2007); „Artist Pension Trust“, Today Art Museum, Beijing and „Liverpool Biennial: Virtual Grizedale“, A Foundation, Liverpool (2006).
Jen Liu writes detailed science-fiction narratives, drawn from contemporary cultural and political references that collide with pop history, icons, computer and print graphics. These allegories are developed into giant watercolours, films and installations. What results are seemingly imaginary worlds, where new visions of the future and ideologies are played out.
The exhibition at Czarna Gallery will include three closely related works by Jen Liu conceived at the end of 2008. The two large scale watercolour drawings and her film “New Dawn Fades” are part of a body of work in which the vision of a collapsed world has come true and divided voices struggle through the ruins of civilization.
This exhibition is a result of Antonia Lotz residency at a-i-r laboratory at Centre for Contemporary Art Ujazdowski Castle, 2008, in frames of the bilateral exchange with Akademie Schloss Solitude, Stuttgart.
